I read quite a lot, but am slow to try new authors, often going back and rereading an old favorite instead of trying somebody new... which probably explains why I've never heard of Lois McMaster Bujold even though she's won the Hugo award 4 times. The Jamaica trip forced my hand though with a desperate need of beach books, so I looked for Hugo (and Nebula) award winning books from the last few years... settling on Paladin of Souls initially, but moving back to Curse of Chalion when I realized it was first in the series. I guess she's mainly known for her sci-fi books, but her transition to fantasy novels seems to have been smooth.
I've since devoured both books, and I must say that while both were excellent, Paladin of Souls has to be one of the best fantasy books I've ever read. Highly recommended if you are into that sort of thing.
